Bradley J. Walz

I’ll look under as many stones as possible to find a solution.

My Approach

Because I practice in both intellectual property litigation and on the buying, selling and licensing of intellectual property side, I get to see the whole life cycle, and can use the experience with each side to inform the other. On the transaction side, I work with clients to draft trademark related agreements, services, software licensing, and compliance issues. I work to make sure the ownership rights are clearly defined in every situation, and develop a deep understanding of the product to make sure the terms and the allocation of risk is appropriate.

In litigation, too, it’s important to understand the business and the potential exposure, and how agreements are drafted to have a better idea of how to prevail in a dispute. I represent clients in federal district court and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in relation to trademark, unfair competition, copyright and cybersquatting claims.

Many of my clients are small, start-up companies, and I love working  with them from the first step. I partner with them to find solutions for their problems. I also understand that, with smaller, newer companies, often you have to rub each nickel ten times before you can spend it – and I take that into account in all of my advice to my clients.

Outside of work, I am an avid Vikings fan – I never miss a Sunday. I like to keep active, and my young daughter definitely helps with that.

A Groundbreaking Moment In My Career

When I joined Winthrop, I had zero knowledge of intellectual property; I was as green as they come. One day, the other, more senior associate in the group announced she was leaving – and I was left to be the one the partners would lean on. I had a steep learning curve, and quickly grew in my understanding and skills. I was suddenly the person my partners were relying on, and I knew I had to step up to the challenge.
