I worked at an investment bank from 2007 to 2012, and while I was there, saw first-hand how inefficient it was to pick up the phone or send emails to raise capital for businesses. I realized it would be a good deal better to raise funds online, but the archaic laws at the time prohibited it. Along with colleagues and partners, I worked tirelessly to co-draft the MNvest law, find sponsors in the legislature, raise necessary seed capital to advocate for its passage and ultimately get it passed. It was a lot of work, and I learned much about the practicalities of the political process, but now businesses are finally able to use investment crowdfunding to fuel their business ideas!
The most rewarding part of my role is to be able to sit down with entrepreneurs and help them draft a game plan to incorporate, access capital, hire employees and ultimately watch them open their door and sell their products/services on Day One. I work with young companies trying to grow in advising on how to execute on their plan and think about different sources of capital; I pride myself in being a liaison between the legal and business worlds to help solve problems.
I also have a particular focus in craft breweries, cideries, distilleries, and the cannabis industry, and helping businesses in those industries grow.
Outside of work, I spend time with my family, and I consider myself an activist for investment crowdfunding, have lobbied for changes with the angel investment tax credit, and am involved in trying to change laws relating to cannabis.
