Winthrop & Weinstine has a reputation for allowing young attorneys to immediately start working with clients.

Build an Exciting Practice

If you are ready for a new kind of practice with a law firm that offers a unique philosophy, atmosphere and opportunity for self-starting lawyers, then Winthrop & Weinstine would like to meet you.

We're located in the heart of the Twin Cities, where an energetic and creative community complements the dynamic business landscape. Staff who relocate to our firm are usually quick to experience the reasons why this is one of the most desirable metropolitan areas of the country.

Our History
Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A. was founded in 1979 by six lawyers who decided to leave one of the largest Twin Cities law firms to start their own practice. Since then, we've grown to over 100 lawyers. This growth has resulted not only from the remarkable talents of our lawyers, but also from the philosophy that lawyers should focus on what they do best -- practicing law and serving client needs.

Our Commitment
A cornerstone of our philosophy is to challenge new lawyers with interesting and complex legal projects as well as early client contact. From shareholders to first-year associates, each lawyer has the autonomy to make his or her own decisions. New lawyers are encouraged to develop their professional judgments with guidance from more experienced members of the firm. We have found that this approach not only accelerates skills development but also fosters an enjoyable, fulfilling work experience.

Our Practice
Our business and commercial litigation practice covers all commercial disciplines with particular focus and expertise in the areas of antitrust, employment, securities, intellectual property, product liability, insurance, financial institutions, class actions, appellate, and general and complex business litigation. First- and second-year litigation associates argue motions, take depositions, write briefs, and conduct jury and bench trials in state and federal courts.

Winthrop & Weinstine's corporate and transactional law practice areas include mergers and acquisitions, venture finance, emerging businesses, securities, employment, real estate, taxation, banking, and bankruptcy. In addition, we have an active government relations practice that lobbies on behalf of our clients before local, state, and federal governments and governmental agencies. We also advise and counsel clients in many other areas, including intellectual property law, telecommunications, employment law, franchising, environmental and regulatory compliance, and estate planning. First- and second-year corporate and transactional associates routinely meet with clients, structure, draft, and negotiate agreements, and take an active role in all aspects of the business transactions.

Welcoming Team Members
At Winthrop & Weinstine, we work together energetically and creatively to achieve our goals. We deal with one another fairly, respectfully and honestly to create a healthy, stable and collegial organization where each person feels 100% responsible for the advancement of the firm and its financial results. We reward superior leadership and creativity while encouraging an appropriate balance between personal and professional interests and responsibilities.

This is Winthrop & Weinstine. If you're ready for a new kind of practice with this kind of law firm, then we'd like to meet you.

Winthrop & Weinstine is always interested in hiring qualified lateral attorneys — both shareholders and experienced associates – where there is a need to supplement an existing growing practice group or to create a new practice group when the firm is considering planned expansion. We work to integrate our new attorneys into the firm immediately, yet still allow the individual to manage his or her practice as needed. You'll witness our core value, put people first, the minute you walk through our doors, and we're certain you'll like what you experience. Come see for yourself.

Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A., has high expectations for associates but at the same time we're committed to creating the best environment to foster their success. Our overall success is, after all, dependent on the initiative of our inpidual lawyers and the skills they develop while working at our firm. Because of this, we make every effort to assist with an associate's professional development.

The common goal at Winthrop & Weinstine is to provide excellent legal services while supporting inpidual approaches to the practice of law. Associates are encouraged to expand their professional skills and assume greater responsibility as quickly as they are able to do so. As a reward, Winthrop & Weinstine offers associates a unique opportunity for early shareholder status and additional compensation.

We believe that an associate's development and long-term enjoyment of practicing law also depends on the office environment. We strive to maintain a collegial atmosphere where attorneys and staff truly enjoy working with each other, and also sponsor formal and informal social and recreational activities during the year. These include an all-attorney golf outing every summer, an all-firm picnic every fall, and an all-firm holiday party in December.

Summer Program
The Summer Associate program is designed to provide an experience that fairly reflects life at the firm as a lawyer. It is offered to law students after their first or second year, and presents a challenging variety of legal work:

Summer associates prepare agreements, briefs, interrogatories, and other legal documents and are encouraged to attend client meetings, depositions, court hearings, negotiations, and closings. Each summer associate is assigned a mentor who helps them with administrative, professional, and personal questions. Assignments and workloads are monitored to give each summer associate an opportunity to work with a number of different attorneys throughout the summer.

A formal rotation program is not used, but summer associates get to work in different areas of practice throughout their experience. We make an effort to ensure that the summer associate has significant exposure to a particular practice area, if they so desire. As a measure of the program's success, almost every summer associate who has received an offer to join the firm has accepted it.

Our associate compensation system is designed to attract and recruit the top law students throughout the United States and rewarding those associates whose productivity contributes to the growth and profitability of the firm. This includes not only a market rate compensation and bonus structure, but also opportunities to participate in activities traditionally reserved for shareholders and to attain early shareholder status.

First-year associates receive base compensation of $120,000 per year and are eligible for certain discretionary and non-discretionary bonuses.

Winthrop & Weinstine has also a unique program that confers upon associates the status of "Managing Associate." Managing Associates are invited to attend shareholder meetings, receive most financial information regularly distributed to shareholders, and serve on most firm committees. In addition, Managing Associates are eligible for early shareholder consideration. Through this program of enhanced benefits, the firm has eliminated many of the traditional distinctions between shareholders and top performing associates. This approach reflects our commitment to reward qualified associates with aspects of law firm ownership.
