Because of my career, I have had relationships with five different law firms in Minneapolis, and I always come back to Winthrop & Weinstine[…]I would recommend them for both small cases and large ones. I have used them in both and have never been disappointed.

Thomas H. Boyd, Shareholder at Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A., Named as One of the “Attorneys of the Year”
Minneapolis, MN — February 21, 2013. Commercial litigation shareholder Thomas H. Boyd was recently selected to Minnesota Lawyer’s 2012 “Attorneys of the Year” list.  This annual award is reserved for a select group of attorneys from throughout the state who have distinguished themselves through exemplary work.  This year’s honorees will be featured in a special section in Minnesota Lawyer on February 25th and during an awards dinner on February 21st, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Minneapolis.

Minnesota Lawyer will also present the Circle of Excellence award to Mr. Boyd.  This award honors those who have been named to the” Attorneys of the Year” list in previous years.  Mr. Boyd was also named as an “Attorney of the Year” in 2006.

The honorees were chosen based on the following criteria: procuring a successful result in an important case or business transaction, leadership in professional associations, participation in newsworthy events in the legal community, or by performing significant public services or in-house legal services.  This past year, Winthrop & Weinstine was hired by the Minnesota Legislature when its ballot question on the proposed Voter Identification amendment was challenged and attempts were made to deprive Minnesota voters of their constitutional right to vote on the proposed amendment.   Mr. Boyd played a bi-partisan role in successfully representing the Minnesota Legislature in these proceedings.  The Minnesota Supreme Court held the proposed amendment would remain on the ballot, thus preserving the Legislature’s authority under the Minnesota Constitution.

Mr. Boyd practices primarily in the area of commercial litigation and civil appeals.  He handles cases involving contract law, tort law, probate and trust matters, employment law, intellectual property, eminent domain and land use, product liability, and insurance coverage disputes.  He is a founding member and former chair of the Appellate Practice Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Eighth Circuit Bar Association. He has also served on the boards of directors of the ABA's Council of Appellate Lawyers and the Federal Bar Association (Minnesota Chapter).  He currently works in the North Dakota Office of the Attorney General as the Special Assistant Attorney General.

In the community, he has served as chair and is on the board of the Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society and is also the immediate past president of the Ramsey County Historical Society.  He is currently on several non-profit boards of directors, including Minnesota Landmarks and the Minnesota Veterinary History Museum, and has served on countless others during his career.  He also currently chairs the pro bono committee at Winthrop & Weinstine and provides extensive support and mentoring to those doing pro bono work.

Mr. Boyd received his J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law, his M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Iowa and his B.A. from the University of Iowa.
