I represent clients in business and commercial matters ranging from contract disputes and business-related torts to employment litigation and general financial services litigation. These matters have involved representation of business and individuals in numerous types of claims in state and federal courts.
I work with clients to identify and achieve their goals, whether through litigation or pre-litigation advocacy and negotiation. Once the client’s goals have been pinpointed, I shut out all outside noise and throw myself into their case wholeheartedly. I truly relish the challenge of learning each client’s unique case, business, or industry, while working collaboratively and creatively with the client to prepare and present their case—their story—in the simplest and most effective manner possible. During the better part of a decade that I honed these advocacy and presentation skills competing with college and law school mock trial teams to national tournaments, serving as a legal writing student instructor, and serving as student legislative advocate to state and federal legislators for the University of Minnesota Duluth, I learned firsthand that the art of advocacy is of paramount importance.
To each case, I also bring a diversity of experience and an aptitude for rapidly learning new subject matters that has given me a very unique and well-rounded grasp of the law. In the past decade, I have interned at a prosecutor’s office, clerked at a public defender’s office, volunteered for the Innocence Project of Minnesota, worked as a student attorney helping small businesses set up and establish their businesses, externed for The Honorable Diana Murphy of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and clerked for The Honorable Chief Justice Lorie Gildea of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Although my practice now focuses on business and commercial disputes, including, most often, construction contract and defect litigation, low-income housing tax credit litigation, and employment-related litigation, I frequently draw on my diverse background of experience and capacity for learning new subject matters to handle a wide variety of other matters that come across my desk, including business tort litigation, shareholder disputes, financial services litigation, creditors’ remedies litigation, energy services litigation, appellate work, and even international sports contract arbitration. I also thoroughly enjoy utilizing these skills to give back to the Minnesota community, litigating pro bono cases ranging from criminal record expungement to tax-related matters. Whatever the case may be, the client will always receive my best work, and my wide breadth of experience enables me to offer a more complete, understandable, and effective presentation to each judge or decision-maker before whom I appear.
I also bring a well-informed understanding of the law and the judicial system to each case due to my time serving as a judicial extern to The Honorable Diana Murphy of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and a judicial law clerk to The Honorable Chief Justice Lorie Gildea of the Minnesota Supreme Court. During those invaluable, behind-the-scenes experiences, I quickly learned what makes for an effective argument, and what does not. Most importantly, I developed the crucial ability to objectively analyze, distill, and harness the law as it actually is, not merely as one wishes the law was. Consequently, I am able to present a far more sound and appealing argument to each judge or decision-maker before whom I appear.
Outside of work, I enjoy continuing to find new things to learn and new ways to challenge myself, whether it be fitness, golf, or playing guitar. Having grown up in Superior, Wisconsin, I also derive great enjoyment from the outdoors, including fishing and hunting.
