Thomas M. Hart

How the other side treats negotiation shows exactly how they'll treat the business relationship.

My Approach

Every real estate transaction is more than what’s on the paper; it’s a relationship, and must be treated with the respect it deserves. In addition to the relationships I develop with my clients, I see myself as the facilitator in establishing their own relationships; in a landlord-tenant agreement, for example, the landlord and tenant might be together for 20 years. Even if a client is involved in a sale or disposition, it is possible, perhaps even likely, that the client may end up doing other deals over the years with the same parties. The way the negotiation goes sets the tone of whatever relationship emerges from the transaction. I work with my clients to make sure not only that they get what they need out of a transaction, but that it’s handled in a positive way. Even on contentious issues, one can be a firm and tough negotiator without being disrespectful or disagreeable.

I’ve had the pleasure of working in the same firm for nearly 40 years, and working with many of the same clients over those years. I enjoy being a consigliere for those clients, a true counselor, to give them sound, balanced business advice, because I know them and their businesses so well. I became a lawyer out of respect for the idea that the law can be a positive force in our society, and do everything I can to facilitate progress on behalf of my clients, not get in the way of it.

Outside of work, I have two daughters and three grandkids whom I adore, and I love great food and wine, politics, travel, golf, reading and cooking.
