I work with clients on all things trademark, brand, and copyright related, including obtaining trademarks, negotiating licensing, software or SAAS agreements, due diligence as part of mergers or acquisitions, and other corporate or contractual work as it relates to IP, and, when necessary, litigation to protect the brand.
From my early days playing bass in a band, I have always been at my best when working on a team to create something. I think that’s why I was drawn to trademark and brand protection: in this area, I help clients develop and protect their intellectual property, often right from the beginning, and counsel them on how best to use that intellectual property to propel their businesses.
The reliance that a company has on its brand spans all industries, and my clients have included outdoor sporting and hunting companies, medical device manufacturers, universities, banks, restaurants, breweries, and even a board game publisher. Despite their varied markets, they have many of the same questions: “What’s going to happen with my name?” “Is my brand being harmed?” and “How can I fight against an infringer?” I listen to my clients’ concerns, and work with them to find solutions.
Outside of work, I love watching the Minnesota Twins and my Iowa Hawkeyes, and going on walks with my wife and our golden retriever, Hank. Sometimes I even still play the bass.
